Travel Safely

Being safe on the roads around the holidays is vital. People are traveling with their families, so you want to make sure that you and your car are fit for travel.

  • Have your car examined by a licensed mechanic. You’ll want to make sure that your fluids are all at the correct levels. Tire pressure is an important factor too, especially when traveling on icy roads.
  • Holiday travel usually means delays, either due to weather or traffic. So you’ll want to leave yourself lots of extra time on the road. If a trip during the summer would take you three hours, leave yourself four, just in case.
  • Taking lots of breaks while you travel is also very important. Stretching helps prevent fatigue, and you definitely don’t want to be tired while stuck in traffic.

Be Careful with Decorations

Christmas decorations are often beautiful displays of twinkling lights and glimmering ornaments. But there are a few precautions that everyone should take when decking the halls.

  • Before you set up any Christmas lights, check the wires carefully for any damage or fraying. Exposed wires are a fire hazard, and could turn your tree into a torch!
  • On that note, when choosing an artificial tree, make sure that it is fire resistant. Keeping the tree away from the fireplace is important as well. A random spark could also cause a fire.
  • Small children love the pretty lights and ornaments on the tree. Having shatter-proof ornaments is a great way to prevent any harm to your children.

Guidelines for a Safe Fireplace

Who doesn’t love a roaring fire during the holidays? They save on heating costs, and curling up in front of the fire is a great way to relax. There are some things you should do to prevent fires in your home though.

  • Don’t overload the fireplace! If you build your fire too big, as the logs settle, they could roll out of the grate and onto your floor. So make sure there isn’t too much in the fire. Building the fire correctly will result in an enjoyable, and more importantly, a safe fire.
  • Using a spark guard will protect your family and your floors. Knots in the wood will pop and can cause embers to jump from the fire. Sparks will also fly as wood settles and things land in the hot ashes. A fireplace gate is a must if your intend to have any fires in your home.

Follow these tips and you’re sure to have a safe and happy holiday!
